Softball eliminated from AE tournament : UMBC Sports Blog

Thanks to a miracle the UMBC softball team made it to the post season but unfortunately a miracle for their opponent, Binghamton, took them out of the America East tournament when they lost to Binghamton, 3-2.

UMBC had a 2-1 lead after five innings but Binghamton scored two runs in the sixth inning to get away with the victory.

Jessica Warner gave UMBC a 1-0 lead in the first inning after she stole home plate on a double steal and Stephanie Weigman shut Binghamton out through three innings, not allowing a single hit until the fourth. Unfortunately one of her two hits given up in the fourth resulted in a run.

But UMBC kept fighting and re-took the lead in the fourth inning when Lynn Pronobis scored after Lauren O?Malley singled to center field with two outs and a 2-2 count.

Weigman pitched well for the rest of the game except for one series. Weigman walked back-to-back batters to start the sixth inning and both resulted in runs to give Binghamton a 3-2 lead and that lead stuck as UMBC went hitless in their final six at bats.

With this loss after a 9-1 loss to top-seeded Boston U on the first day of the tournament the Retrievers were eliminated from the 2011 America East tournament.

UMBC ends the season with a 25-26 overall record. Senior second baseman Lauren Brummell and junior Katie Ferguson both earned first-team all-conference honors while senior pitcher Weigman and senior outfielder Julia Culotta both received second-team honors. Warner was named to the all-rookie team.
