BOSTON (CBS) ? The owner of the Milk Street Cafe was not serving sandwiches to his customers on Thursday, as he was in Washington picking up a coveted award.
Marc Epstein was named S.B.A. Small Business Person of the Year for Massachusetts.
Epstein launched the business 30 years ago at the age of 23 and he admits it has not been an easy road. Epstein says he lost a third of his business in the 2008 economic downturn and had to figure out how to survive.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030?s Anthony Silva reports.
But, Epstein adds that he didn?t lay anyone off as the economy tanked, as his entire staff shared in ?the pain,? he took the biggest pay cut. Now, with the help of an SBA-guaranteed loan and deal with the Trump organization, he?s planning a second location. The new Milk Street Cafe will soon be opening on Wall Street, near Ground Zero in New York.
He will be adding 80 new positions at the restaurant. Epstein says that is the most important challenge for small business owners, adding jobs to help the economy grow.
