Kauai Community College to break ground for affordable housing prototype project

LIHU?E, Kaua?i, Hawai?i - On Friday, September 28, Kaua?i Community College will break ground to mark the commencement of the construction phase of its Ho?ouluwehi Affordable / Sustainable Living House Prototype project. The blessing will be conducted by Reverend Wayne A. Vidinha, Sr., of Ke Akua Mana Church at 10:30 a.m. in an area on the campus known as ?The Farm.?

Kaua?i CC students enrolled in the college?s introductory carpentry class taught by instructor Robert Steurich will turn a used shipping container into a home. The coursework will provide students with a full experience ranging from foundation work through finish carpentry.

?As builders, we should always be searching for ways to build affordable housing and maintain the existing housing stock. Students will learn building practices and procedures that result in a quality product,? said Steurich.

?Just a few months ago, we saw a dented, used container. Today, we can envision an affordable living home. This prototype is being built by Kaua?i students, on Kaua?i, for Kauaians, for the future. Our students will have the skill set to further help address our housing needs, and fill professional construction livable-wage jobs here at home, to help address our housing needs,? said Eric Knutzen, executive director of Kaua?i CC?s Ho?ouluwehi: The Sustainable Living Institute of Kaua?i.

Making solid contributions toward affordable housing solutions on Kaua?i has provided Kaua?i CC immense fulfillment and purpose.

?This is just a beginning step in a really innovative and exciting project that will benefit our students and the Kaua?i community, and demonstrates what great things can come when partners works together to improve our community,? said Kaua?i CC Chancellor Helen A. Cox. The college welcomes visitors to view the project.

Kaua?i CC has enjoyed exciting and inspiring exchanges with its partners, the Office of the Mayor and County of Kaua?i departments.

In January 2012, after two years of planning that involved faculty, staff and students with community partners, Kaua?i CC launched its Ho?ouluwehi: The Sustainable Living Institute of Kaua?i, a program that offers an innovative sustainable leaning focal point for Kaua?i by:

  • ?embedding sustainability principles within Kaua?i CC offered curriculum;
  • ?advancing partnerships with the University of Hawai?i, government, private business, non-profit agencies and individuals; and
  • ?implementing research and projects to foster a more vibrant future for Kaua?i, and fueling related employment vitality.

Students enrolled in the Kaua?i CC Introductory Carpentry class are Lloyd-Kekoa Agustin, Dwaine Albarado, Rogelio Casem, Yvinne Difontorum, Cullen Gutierrez, Edward Kemmerling, Ariel Lothlorien, James Nishida and Kyle Redaus.

Time bomb: Military ordnance in Gulf of Mexico poses threat to shipping, says expert

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Millions of pounds of unexploded bombs and other military ordnance that were dumped decades ago in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the coasts of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, could now pose serious threats to shipping lanes and the 4,000 oil and gas rigs in the Gulf, warns two Texas A&M University oceanographers.

William Bryant and Neil Slowey, professors of oceanography who have more than 90 years of combined research experience in all of Earth's oceans, along with fellow researcher Mike Kemp of Washington, D.C., say millions of pounds of bombs are scattered over the Gulf of Mexico and also off the coasts of at least 16 states, from New Jersey to Hawaii.

Bryant says the discarded bombs are hardly a secret. "This has been well known for decades by many people in marine science and oceanography," he explains.

He will give a presentation in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Oct. 1 about the bombs to a group of oceanographers and marine scientists in a conference titled "International Dialogue on Underwater Munitions."

"This subject has been very well documented through the years," Bryant explains. "My first thought when I saw the news reports of the Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf two years ago were, 'Oh my gosh, I wonder if some of the bombs down there are to blame.'"

Military dumping of unused bombs into the Gulf and other sites started in 1946 and continued until 1970, when it was finally banned.

Millions of pounds -- no one, including the military, knows how many -- were sent to the ocean floor as numerous bases tried to lessen the amount of ordnance at their respective locations.

"The best guess is that at least 31 million pounds of bombs were dumped, but that could be a very conservative estimate," Bryant notes.

"And these were all kinds of bombs, from land mines to the standard military bombs, also several types of chemical weapons. Our military also dumped bombs offshore that they got from Nazi Germany right after World War II. No one seems to know where all of them are and what condition they are in today."

Photos show that some of the chemical weapons canisters, such as those that carried mustard gas, appear to be leaking materials and are damaged.

"Is there an environmental risk? We don't know, and that in itself is reason to worry," explains Bryant. "We just don't know much at all about these bombs, and it's been 40 to 60 years that they've been down there."

With the ship traffic needed to support the 4,000 energy rigs, not to mention commercial fishing, cruise lines and other activities, the Gulf can be a sort of marine interstate highway system of its own. There are an estimated 30,000 workers on the oil and gas rigs at any given moment.

The bombs are no stranger to Bryant and Slowey, who have come across them numerous times while conducting various research projects in the Gulf, and they have photographed many of them sitting on the Gulf floor like so many bowling pins, some in areas cleared for oil and gas platform installation.

"We surveyed some of them on trips to the Gulf within the past few years," he notes. "Ten are about 60 miles out and others are about 100 miles out. The next closest dump site to Texas is in Louisiana, not far from where the Mississippi River delta area is in the Gulf. Some shrimpers have recovered bombs and drums of mustard gas in their fishing nets."

Bombs used in the military in the 1940s through the 1970s ranged from 250- to 500- and even 1,000-pound explosives, some of them the size of file cabinets. The military has a term for such unused bombs: UXO, or unexploded ordnance.

"Record keeping of these dump sites seems to be sketchy and incomplete at best. Even the military people don't know where all of them are, and if they don't know, that means no one really knows," Bryant adds. He believes that some munitions were "short dumped," meaning they were discarded outside designated dumping areas.

The subject of the disposal of munitions at sea has been discussed at several offshore technology conferences in recent years, and it was a topic at an international conference several years ago in Poland, Bryant says.

"The bottom line is that these bombs are a threat today and no one knows how to deal with the situation," Bryant says. "If chemical agents are leaking from some of them, that's a real problem. If many of them are still capable of exploding, that's another big problem.

"There is a real need to research the locations of these bombs and to determine if any are leaking materials that could be harmful to marine life and humans," Bryant says.

Danica Patrick could take Newman's crew in 2013

DOVER, Del. (AP) ? Danica Patrick appears set to work with Ryan Newman's crew for her fulltime Sprint Cup ride in 2013.

Stewart-Haas Racing would like to ease Patrick's transition by letting her work with crew chief Tony Gibson and his team. Newman, who drives the No. 39 for SHR, would then be in the market for a new crew chief.

"I'm just kind of looking at what's best for her, surrounding her with the best people we can that are upbeat and positive," said Greg Zipadelli, Stewart-Haas Racing competition director and race strategist for Patrick.

Zipadelli said Saturday that all options are being considered and a decision could be made in the next week or two. But the move is all but official. He's been talking to crew chief candidates for 2013 that would likely work with Newman.

Zipadelli said Gibson's experience and upbeat approach make him a great fit for Patrick, who is 11th in the points standings in her first full season driving for JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series. She ran a limited Nationwide schedule in 2010 and 2011.

"It's easier to do that than to bring somebody else in that we don't know or know as well as we know him," Zipadelli said. "I think he'd add an awful lot to her and her program."

Patrick has made six Cup starts this season and will race her 10th and final Sprint Cup Series event on Oct. 21 at Kansas Speedway.

She'll make her seventh Cup start of the season Sunday at Dover International Speedway. Patrick said she's a Gibson fan and supports the pending move.

"I've always felt like he listens to me when I'm talking and that always means a lot," Patrick said. "I feel like I get the respect from him. I think that's the culture that Tony Stewart and all the guys there create. Everybody's happy."

Newman has one win this season and failed to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.

He said after Saturday's qualifying he had "no idea" about Gibson potentially leaving for Patrick's team.

"I don't know that I am (losing him) or he is or whatever," Newman said. "I don't know what you're talking about."

TESTING 1, 2, 3, 4: NASCAR will let organizations test at circuit tracks four times next season to go along with the season-opening test at Daytona.

The organizations can pick the tracks where they'll test. NASCAR had banned teams from testing at circuit tracks since 2009 in a cost-cutting move.

"We feel like it's time to open that up and allow the teams to manage their testing and get back on facilities that host our events," NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said Saturday. "You'll see that as the year unfolds that teams will be moving around the countryside."

NASCAR will hold a test session for the 2013 car next week at Talladega. Pemberton said test will focus on the cooling and drafting packages.

There are also tests scheduled for Texas, Kansas, Charlotte, and Phoenix.

"We are developing this car and tires at the same time," Pemberton said. "It's something we haven't been able to do in the past. But because Goodyear has put the resources toward tires ... we're better positioned now to develop the car and the tire at the same time."

Team owner Jack Roush liked the move.

"As long as it's the same for everybody," he said.

The new testing policy is only for the Sprint Cup series.

DENNY AND DOUG: Denny Hamlin has more in common with Michael Jordan than a love of golf and VIP treatment at Charlotte Bobcats game.

Turns out, they're both tight with Jordan's former Chicago Bulls coach, Doug Collins.

Collins, starting his third season coaching the Philadelphia 76ers, has forged a bond with Hamlin over the past 18 months after the NASCAR star visited the Sixers before their 2011 playoff run.

Hamlin was invited by Collins to address the team and played a game of HORSE with guards Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner.

"I've just enjoyed watching his career and how he's doing," Collins said.

Collins was impressed with Hamlin's impromptu talk to the team about having fun and enjoying the playoff chase ? something he admitted to the Sixers he failed to do when he was runner-up for the 2010 Cup championship. Hamlin also shared a story about he stuck by his pit crew after a poor season, then was rewarded the next season with his crew was recognized as one of the best in the sport. That message of sticking together as a team through the tough times resonated with Collins because the Sixers had turned a 3-13 start into a playoff berth.

"He said he's my biggest fan," said Hamlin, smiling. "I think my mom is, but he texts us every week now during the Chase and congratulates us on how we've been doing."

Collins is a master motivator who has turned the Sixers into winners and Eastern Conference contenders. He requests smiley faces when he texts his players and gifts them with inspirational books.

"He gives you that pep talk similar to MJ," Hamlin said. "He's a lot like (owner) Joe Gibbs in the sense of how he is as a team leader."

Hamlin's stop in Philadelphia was no one-and-done meeting. Athletes meet other athletes or coaches all the time at awards shows, commercial shoots, or sponsorship requirement. But a bond forged like the one between Collins and Hamlin is pretty rare. Collins doesn't even watch NASCAR. Hamlin, while an NBA junkie, is a Bobcats fan. They met again last season with the Sixers played at Charlotte.

"I don't know what he sees in us," Hamlin said. "But he knows that I'm a huge basketball fan and I have the drive to win the championship. He's just behind me every week."

Hamlin, third in the points standings, was open this week about his disdain for racing at Dover International Speedway. Hamlin received advice from a sports psychologist that he needed to "fall in love with the track."

Collins read this week about Hamlin's struggles at Dover and was proud of how he is trying to overcome them.

"I just tried to reach out and gave him some encouragement," Collins said. "I just tell him to kick (rear) and that I'll be watching. More important, have fun with what you're doing. The thing I love about him is that he loves what he's doing."

Collins just hasn't quite persuaded Hamlin to make the 76ers his favorite NBA team over the Bobcats.

"It's tough being a Bobcats fan," Hamlin said. "But being the home team, you've got to root for them."

But he does root for Collins and the Sixers to do well ? especially in the postseason.

"I'm just a big fan of Doug," Hamlin said. "I think he's one of those guys that has the respect of everyone at the NBA."

Concept Aquatic Rover May Explore a Lake On Titan

I'm going to complain here, because no-one else cares...

One of my pet hates is that when the media publishes a measurement, they will give both metric and imperial, and will calculate it to ridiculous significant figures.

For instance, this imaginary robot might weigh, you know, round about 100 kilo - which is 220.5 lbs! Yep, they know know the measurements to the nearest 10th of a pound, but coincidentally it happens to be a really round figure in metric terms.

Rant over. Feel free to ignore.

Kickstarter: Helios, An iPhone Telepresence Rig On A Budget

Another day, another iOS-based telepresence rig. The Helios is a tiny little two-wheeled car that drives around with your iPhone or Touch in the passenger seat, allowing you to move around a scene and interact with remote subjects through the magic of telepresence.

They are raising money through Kickstarter.

Telepresence is a hard nut to crack. People just aren?t that comfortable having a robotic intermediary. But as this generation grows up with video calling and home robotics, I suspect it will be much easier to ? as the above image suggests ? roll out into the park with your SO.

From the creator, Tian Long Wang:

We are currently on the third iteration of Helios. The first model was developed during the Spring 2012 hackathon at Princeton University. This version was built on a trackpad platform by Robotshop and took first place int he hardware category of the hackathon. After some problems with the tracked moving parts, the second version of of Helios was built on the Boebot platform. As our development of the hardware continued, we created the third and current version with the help of SeeedStudio, one of the largest electronics manufacturers in China. The current version employs personal electronic circuits in addition to a completely new body design, manufactured through CNC and 3D plastic printing. For larger volumes, we will use injection molding for all plastic part, which also allows for a glossier look. As outlined, the pricing tiers represent actual manufacturing quotes from SeeedStudio.

The robot will cost $120 when it ships, but early buyers can get it for $99. The project is at $3,000 of a $50,000 pledge request so this might end up in the dustbin of telepresence robot history, but perhaps someone out there will buy 5,000 of them and send entire robot drone armies through the streets of major American cities. A guy can dream?

Exposure to herbicide may increase risk of rare disorder

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A common herbicide used in the United States may be linked to an increased risk of a congenital abnormality of the nasal cavity known as choanal atresia, say researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and other Texas institutions.

The study by Dr. Philip Lupo, assistant professor of pediatrics -- hematology/oncology at BCM and Texas Children's Cancer Center, is scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics.

Affects ability to breathe

Choanal atresia is a disorder where the back of the nasal passage is blocked by tissue formed during fetal development. It is a rare condition but can be serious because it affects a baby's ability to breathe. It is typically treated through surgery.

Very few risk factors for choanal atresia have been identified, however chemicals that disrupt the maternal endocrine system may be associated with risk, according to Lupo. The study focused on atrazine, which is the most commonly used herbicide in the United States -- especially in corn crops -- and is believed to be an endocrine disrupter.

"Endocrine disrupters aren't fully understood, but it is believed they interfere with or mimic certain hormones, thereby blocking their proper function and potentially leading to adverse outcomes," Lupo said.

Discovering origin of birth defect

The study found that mothers who lived in Texas counties with the highest levels of estimated atrazine application were 80 percent more likely to have children with choanal atresia or stenosis compared to women who lived in the counties with the lowest levels. Choanal stenosis is a less severe form of the condition.

Data for the study was collected from the Texas Birth Defects Registry.

"Our results warrant more detailed exploration before any public health or policy-related recommendations are made," Lupo said, "but this study is a good first step in trying to understand the origin of this birth defect, including a possible role of atrazine."

The study was funded in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded Texas Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention through a cooperative agreement with Texas Department of State Health Services as well as the Title V Office of Texas DSHS. Others involved in the research included A. J. Agopian, Yi Cai, Peter H. Langlois, and Mark A. Canfield.

Wall Street drops on growth fears, quarter remains positive

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Friday as investors locked in gains at the end of a strong quarter and amid uncertainty ahead of the result of stress tests on Spanish banks.

Equities added to their losses following a weaker-than-expected read on the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago's index of Midwest business activity, which fell to 49.7 in September from 53.0 in August.

The final read on the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey on consumer sentiment was also less than expected, though it advanced to its highest in four months.

"We had been seeing good data recently, but now we seem to be following the slowdown in China and Europe and we're seeing weakness," said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners in Chicago.

A plan for economic reform in Spain had sparked a rally Thursday, though the bank stress-test results and a review of Spain's credit rating by Moody's, both due later in the day, could compound the nation's challenges in dealing with its debt.

Investors are also worried about anti-austerity protests across Europe, which could make political maneuvering more difficult.

Trading was light following Thursday's gains and on the last day of the quarter, when money managers reposition their portfolios. The S&P has advanced 5.5 percent over the past three months.

All ten S&P sectors fell, though losses were limited in technology <.gspt> as U.S. shares of Research in Motion rocketed 13 percent to $8.04 on the back of a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.

Nike Inc warned of slowing orders in China, the latest company to caution on how economic weakness in the Asian giant was impacting its business. Shares fell 2.4 percent to $93.63 and pressured consumer discretionary stocks <.gspd> down 0.9 percent as weakest on the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 111.61 points, or 0.83 percent, at 13,374.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 10.17 points, or 0.70 percent, at 1,436.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 20.60 points, or 0.66 percent, at 3,116.00.

The S&P is down 1.6 percent this week so far, for a second straight week in the red, though Thursday's rally narrowed the losses from five straight days of declines. The Dow is down 1.5 percent for the week and the Nasdaq is down 2 percent.

Wall Street's gains in the quarter were largely linked to expectations for measures by central banks around the world to boost their economies.

After those expectations were met, stocks have struggled for direction and trading has been thin, as investors looked to new catalysts amid lackluster data and lowered corporate earnings outlooks. Advance Micro Devices , which cut its outlook in July, has slumped 41 percent to be the S&P's worst performer this quarter.

U.S. consumer spending rose in August by the most in six months as households stretched to pay for higher gasoline prices, according to a Commerce Department report.

There may be volatility on Friday as investors "window dress," or undergo a last-minute push to reposition portfolios ahead of the quarter's end. MetroPCS and Sprint Nextel are the S&P's two biggest gainers in the quarter, with the former almost doubling in value.

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? An estimated 100,000 opposition supporters thronged the center of Georgia's capital on Saturday in a show of strength days ahead of a parliamentary election that presents the toughest challenge to the future of Mikhail Saakashvili's government since he became president nearly nine years ago.

The capital, Tbilisi, where a third of Georgia's population lives, long ago turned against Saakashvili. Many people here are disturbed by what they describe as his authoritarian rule, pointing to his control over parliament, the courts and the prosecutor's office.

"He created a system of oppression and covered it with the pretty facade of democracy," said Dali Dvalishvili, who attended the boisterous campaign rally. Although trained as a lawyer, the 28-year-old woman said she was unable to work in a system "where the prosecutor's office dictates everything."

Under Saakashvili, the former Soviet republic has become a U.S. ally and worked toward closer integration with NATO and the European Union. In Monday's election, the president is under pressure to prove his commitment to democracy by holding a free and fair vote.

The election has added significance because it ushers in a new political system that will give greater powers to the parliament and prime minister. After Saakashvili's second and last term ends next year, the party that has a majority in parliament will have the right to name the prime minister, who will acquire many of the powers now held by the president.

Saakashvili's United National Movement, which now holds nearly 80 percent of the seats in parliament, is up against Georgian Dream, a coalition formed by Bidzina Ivanishvili, a billionaire businessman who made his fortune in Russia.

Most observers see the race as too close to call, although they give the governing party the edge.

The mood was upbeat on Saturday as people of all ages gathered on Freedom Square for Ivanishvili's giant campaign rally. Many wore Georgian Dream T-shirts in blue, white or black.

"Saakashvili's system based on lawlessness and torture should be destroyed," Ivanishvili told the crowd.

Saakashvili's campaign was hit hard by the release two weeks ago of shocking videos showing prisoners in a Tbilisi jail being beaten and sodomized. The government moved quickly to stem the anger, replacing Cabinet ministers blamed for the abuse and arresting prison staff, but many saw the videos as illustrating the excesses of his government.

Insley manipulates the minds of these women so that they give him their bodies and all their worldly possessions. Victor?s childhood love, Becky, returns to take care of her deathly ill father. Victor, haunted by visions of Becky?s death, is desperate to save her and himself by escaping from the polygamous cult. Preoccupied with Insley?s free love philosophy, the adults of the community overlook the painful reality that the self destructive behavior of their children is most certainly due to early exposure to sex and drugs. To afford an escape, Victor tries to sell weed but is cut out by rivals competing for Becky?s affection. Finally, Victor is torn between getting money from his mother who is entirely under Insley?s influence, dealing with the violent drama of his drug-addled friends, and staying to save Becky as she spins out of control.

Schumer calls on NY developer to plan now for Amtrak tunnels

(Reuters) - A long-stalled plan to unblock a major transport bottleneck into New York City "may end up in the grave yard" unless space is reserved now for new train tunnels under the Hudson River, Senator Charles Schumer said Friday.

The so-called Gateway project, which would cost as much as $13.5 billion, would increase rail capacity between Newark, New Jersey's Pennsylvania Station and Manhattan's Pennsylvania Station.

Federally run Amtrak and New Jersey Transit share two 100-year-old tunnels under the Hudson River. Delays are common because of high over-use.

Amtrak's engineers say the only place to bring the new tunnels into Manhattan is under the Hudson Yards site in West Midtown, according to Schumer, a Democrat. He spoke at a breakfast sponsored by the New York Building Congress, a trade group.

A plan by developer Related Companies for the Hudson Yards site foresees construction of a residential, shopping and office complex over the site's active rail yards. Construction is to start by the end of this year.

"We will need contracts, design plans and construction dollars to flow over the next six to 12 months to make this a reality," Schumer said of the rail project. He wants the digging of the tunnels to start before the end of 2013.

A Related spokeswoman said: "We have been working intensively with Amtrak and the Long Island Rail Road," declining further comment.

The Long Island Rail Road shares Manhattan's Pennsylvania Station with Amtrak and New Jersey Transit.

Schumer pledged to work with Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, a Democrat, who also backs the new tunnels, to raise $120 million of federal funds for the project.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, in 2010 killed a previous multi-billion-dollar plan to relieve congestion by digging another tunnel under the Hudson River, saying his state risked getting stuck with huge cost overruns.

His decision outraged transit advocates and his cost estimates were called into question by the federal General Accountability Office.

"As we've said ever since making that decision, we recognize the need for added rail capacity and will continue to work with all benefiting jurisdictions on an equitable - I repeat, equitable - solution," a Christie spokesman said.

Schumer said the Gateway project was superior to extending New York City's No. 7 subway from West Midtown into New Jersey, partly because the state authority that runs the city's subway and buses could not afford the new link.

BP Submits Tangguh Expansion Plan, Indonesia>> LNG World News

BP Submits Tangguh Expansion Plan

BP is pushing forward with plans to expand the Tangguh LNG plant. Namely, the company announced that they have submitted a Plan of Further Development.

The company wants to build third LNG train, as part of Tangguh plant expansion. The new train would have 3.8 million metric tons production capacity per year.

The LNG processing plant currently consists of two LNG trains, producing at least 7.6 million metric tons of LNG a year.

With 37.16% interest in the project, BP Indonesia is the operator of Tangguh under a production sharing contract with BPMIGAS (Indonesia?s regulatory body for oil and gas upstream activities).

?We only have one item left to be discussed, as such, we are hopeful that the approval for the POFD can be reached next month?, said Hadi Prasetyo, BP spokesman.

The Project involves the tapping of six fields to extract combined proven reserves of around 14.4 trillion cubic feet of gas. Two normally unmanned offshore production platforms located in Bintuni Bay will collect gas from the reservoir, then send it through sub-sea pipelines to an LNG processing facility on the south shore.

Del Ponte joins U.N. war crimes inquiry on Syria

GENEVA (Reuters) - Carla del Ponte, the International Criminal Court's former chief prosecutor, was on Friday appointed a member of a United Nations commission investigating war crimes in Syria.

The commission is gathering evidence for possible future trials of individuals and military units suspected of committing abuses in the 18-month-old conflict in which forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are seeking to quell an uprising against him.

Switzerland proposed that del Ponte, a former Swiss attorney-general, become a commissioner and lobbied hard on her behalf, overcoming resistance by some countries that found her too controversial, diplomats said.

Laura Dupuy Lasserre, president of the U.N. Human Rights Council, said she had appointed del Ponte and Vitit Muntarbhorn to the Commission of Inquiry to join Brazilian Paulo Pinheiro and American Karen Abuzayd.

"Both have a long track record which has been recognized at the highest possible level internationally," she told the Council at the end of a three-week session. "Their reputation is of impartial, independent and objective human rights work."

The appointment of such an experienced lawyer as del Ponte suggests the United Nations is determined to try to build a solid criminal case and bring human rights violators to justice.

Del Ponte's eight years at the Hague-based court were dominated by the pursuit and trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who died in 2006 before sentencing.

"She brings strong investigative skills and an ability to better systematize and use the huge amount of information that the Commission of Inquiry is putting together with a view to prosecution one day," European Union (EU) Ambassador Mariangela Zappia told Reuters.

EXTENDED MANDATE

Peter Splinter, a spokesman for Amnesty International, said: "She will bring valuable knowledge and experience to an already strong commission team."

Muntarbhorn is a veteran expert from Thailand who has served as U.N. special rapporteur on North Korea.

Earlier, the Council extended the mandate of the Syria inquiry by another six months and condemned violations by government forces and pro-Assad militias but also by rebel fighters.

The 47-member forum adopted a resolution by a vote of 41 states in favor, with three states - China, Cuba and Russia - against and three abstentions.

Russia, Syria's ally, voiced concerns about the probe.

"We regret the fact that it has been difficult to achieve official access to Syria, one has to cope with rumors and fabricated data," Russian diplomat Vladimir Zheglov said.

"Therefore, we call upon the commission to act objectively and in a non-politicized way and to use verified facts."

Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui, Syria's ambassador, rejected the text of the resolution submitted by seven Arab states and backed by Western powers as "highly-politicized and selective".

He accused Islamist "terrorists" of fuelling the violence in his country, where activists say 30,000 people have been killed.

The international inquiry led by Pinheiro, set up a year ago, has interviewed more than 1,100 victims, refugees and defectors, documenting massacres including the one at Houla near Homs in May. But it has been denied access to Syria.

Earlier this month, it expanded its secret list of Syrians suspected of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including executions and torture, who it says should face future prosecution.

Pet Post: Penny Lane - AMERICAblog | AMERICAblog

Penny Lane

Penny Lane

Linda in Norco, CA:

Good Morning,

Our daughter, who was living with us while she went back to school, adopted a fantastic Golden Retriever she named Pursy Lane. When she moved to Colorado for graduate school she took Pursy with her, and my husband and I were so lonely without a dog for the first time in many years, we began looking for one of our own to adopt a little over a year ago. We saw a picture of this little girl and fell in love.

When I inquired at the animal shelter, they warned me off because they had recently had her tested for demodectic mange and she tested positive. Apparently it?s an immune deficiency disease some puppies never recover from. She was found wandering the streets as a six week old puppy, and they felt her health was in too much jeopardy for them to give her to someone without a very strong warning.

Needless to say, we adopted her straight away.

Luckily, she has so far beaten the odds and is healthy as can be. We?ve owned many dogs in our lives but for some reason Penny Lane is the most entertaining, loving and exhaustingly athletic dog we?ve ever had. We have no idea what breed she is and it?s been fun watching people guess but the closest we can come is some sort of cross between a Rhodesian Ridgeback, Boxer and possibly a little Pit Bull thrown in. She?s also a very smart dog and did very well at her training sessions.

Here?s another quick funny story. Last summer she tried to eat a bumble bee and was stung inside her mouth. I didn?t actually see it happen but she?d been chasing them for days. She ran into the house where I was sitting at my computer and just sat and stared at me until I finally looked at her. Her lips were swollen as if she?d had a botox treatment or something. Of course we rushed her to the vet, and after everything was fine we started calling her ?Luscious Lips Lane? for awhile. Wish I had a picture of that.

Anyway, we?re so glad we adopted her and at our ages, 62 and 64. I assume she?ll be the last dog we?ll own so we?re really just enjoying the heck out of her.

The photo to the left is the one we fell in love with, and the one above is from a few months ago.

Best Regards,
Linda

Red River: NASA's Mars Rover Discovers Direct Evidence of Flowing Water

September 27, 2012 5:00 PM Text Size: A . A . A Just 52 days since arriving on the Martian surface, NASA's Curiosity rover (officially called the Mars Science Lab) made its first major discovery, sending back pictures of tiny rounded pebbles?evidence of a stream that once flowed on the planet's surface.

Although not the first proof of liquid water on Mars, Curiosity's find of streambed gravel is a scientific first. The pebbles?which would not look out of place in any stream on Earth?not only suggest liquid water was on the Red Planet, but that they were part of a stream that had been flowing for quite some time.

"This is something that would have required thousands of years, if not a million or more years, to form," says Mars Science Laboratory project scientist John Grotzinger of Caltech. This suggests that the stream Curiosity snapped photos of was flowing on the planet's surface much longer than previously thought possible, he says.

"The only thing that comes close to that is what we found with the Opportunity rover," says Grotzinger. "We found evidence of a little bit of a flow across the surface, but in that case it was something that would have only lasted a very, very brief period of time." At best the stream Opportunity found lasted only minutes to hours, Grotzinger says.

Based on the science team's estimates, the ancient stream was flowing "about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," says William Dietrich, Curiosity science co-investigator of the University of California, Berkeley, in a press release.

"This really represents the thing we must have found on this mission in order to go to the next level with Curiosity's science mission," says Grotzinger. "And that is this question of habitable environments." If the Mars Science Laboratory is to find signs of life, then there are few better places to look than a giant, long-flowing stream. "We just have to keep our fingers crossed, he says. "And really hope for some serious luck here to find the organic carbon."

Assange: Obama exploiting Arab Spring in campaign

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange accused President Barack Obama on Thursday of seeking to exploit the Arab uprisings for personal political gain, as he addressed a sideline meeting of the U.N. General Assembly via videolink from his hideout at a London embassy.

The Australian activist has sheltered inside Ecuador's embassy in London ? beyond the reach of British police ? since June 19, when he sought refuge after he exhausted all legal routes to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over sex crimes allegations.

Assange and his supporters claim that the Swedish sex case is part of a Washington-orchestrated plot to make him stand trial in the United States over his work with WikiLeaks, which has published thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables and other documents. Both Sweden and the U.S. reject that claim.

At a sideline meeting organized by Ecuador, the activist attempted to draw parallels between himself and the instigators of the Arab Spring ? claiming that they had all been let down by Obama.

"It must come as a surprise to Tunisians for Barack Obama to say the U.S. supported the forces of change in Tunisia," Assange said, speaking from Ecuador's tiny apartment-sized London mission.

He claimed that uprisings across the Arab world had been inspired, in part, by his organization's disclosures about despotic rulers, including Tunisia's deposed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Assange claimed that Obama ? whose administration he accuses of building a criminal case against WikiLeaks and of harassing its staff ? was seeking to exploit the reforms of the Arab Spring during his reelection campaign.

"Mohamed Bouazizi did not set himself on fire so that Barack Obama could get reelected," Assange told the meeting, referring to the 2011 self-immolation by a Tunisian fruit vendor which sparked the uprising that toppled Ben Ali.

Assange, who made no reference to the Swedish sexual misconduct case as he addressed diplomats, also accused Britain and Sweden of failing to provide guarantees that he would not face extradition to the U.S. to help preserve close military and intelligence links with Washington.

Both European nations insist that Assange must be sent to Sweden under international and European law, and that they cannot legally offer any pledges to refuse a possible future U.S. extradition request.

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has granted Assange asylum, but if he steps outside the country's London embassy he will be arrested by police who surround the building.

The case has left Britain, Ecuador and Sweden at a diplomatic impasse. Foreign ministers from Quito and London will meet Thursday in New York, as Assange marks 100 days holed up in the embassy.

Ecuador's foreign minister Ricardo Patino told the meeting that he believed there were "many ways to achieve a solution," without specifying potential routes. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Tuesday that he saw "no sign of any break through" in the saga.

Britain's foreign ministry said it was "committed to seeking a diplomatic solution" with Ecuador, but insisted that it was legally obliged to send Assange to Sweden.

The business of the honey-suckers in Bengaluru (India) | Global ...

By WASH

A new IRC paper explores some contributions being made by honey-sucker tanker operators ? that renders a small-scale sanitation service informally and within the private sector ? on waste (faecal) extraction and, in some cases, reuse. Operating outside the legal framework of waste management, this paper provides preliminary insight into the limitations and potentials of the ?honey-sucker business? as a sanitation service model, based on selected experiences in Bengaluru (India). Through semi-structured interviews and the?application of?Osterwalder and Pigneur?s (2010) business model building blocks tool, this paper reveals that: a two-sided business model is being employed by the business (benefiting both septic tank/ pit owners?and?farmers); positive outcomes of sludge reuse in farms seem to outweigh negative outcomes; and the honey-sucker business seems to be a financially viable sanitation service model (especially amongst middle-class households with no piped connections). As an exploratory study, the authors of the paper encourage further research into aspects that interlink with the honey-sucker business to achieve greater clarity on its positive contributions to society, and its prospects of scaling up and replication across different contexts. Giant Gas Cloud Surrounds Our Milky Way Galaxy

Astronomers have discovered a cloud of gas engulfing our Milky Way galaxy that weighs as much as all the stars inside our galactic home. If the size and mass of this cloud is confirmed, it may solve a longstanding astronomical mystery, experts say.

The cloud, called a halo, appears to be enormous, extending hundreds of thousands of light-years across. Scientists suspect it is composed mainly of hydrogen, with some oxygen and other elements. The halo's temperature, size and mass were estimated using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton space observatory and Japan's Suzaku satellite.

Researchers think the mass inside this halo could be the answer to what's called the "missing baryon problem." Baryons are a class of subatomic particles that includes the protons and neutrons that make up the atoms inside stars and galaxies.

Theories of the formation and evolution of the universe predict there should be many more baryons than we see. In fact, the baryons that have been accounted for in our local cosmic neighborhood are only half of those predicted to exist there. [8 Baffling Astronomy Mysteries Today]

Galaxy-shrouding gas haloes, such as the one around the Milky Way, may be the hiding spot for many of these missing baryons.

"Although there are uncertainties, the work by Gupta and colleagues provides the best evidence yet that the galaxy's missing baryons have been hiding in a halo of million-Kelvin gas that envelopes the galaxy," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "The estimated density of this halo is so low that similar halos around other galaxies would have escaped detection."

Initial signs of our galaxy's halo came from the Chandra observatory, which observed eight objects shining brightly in X-ray light, and found that some of this light was being absorbed by charged oxygen atoms around the Milky Way. Scientists determined that this absorbing gas is between 1 million and 2.5 million Kelvin (1.8 million and 4.5 million degrees Fahrenheit) ? a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun.

"We know the gas is around the galaxy, and we know how hot it is," Anjali Gupta, lead author of a paper reporting the findings in The Astrophysical Journal, said in a statement. "The big question is, how large is the halo, and how massive is it?"

Follow-up observations by the XMM-Newton and the Suzaku satellite indicate that the gas is as heavy as 10 billion to 60 billion suns.

"Our work shows that, for reasonable values of parameters and with reasonable assumptions, the Chandra observations imply a huge reservoir of hot gas around the Milky Way," said co-author Smita Mathur of Ohio State University in Columbus. "It may extend for a few hundred thousand light-years around the Milky Way or it may extend farther into the surrounding local group of galaxies. Either way, its mass appears to be very large."

Just use pm it works great, you can edit and correct events together while still making it suprising and interesting for everyone involved. Though if you wanna make the fights randomize you guys can make some character sheets and just roll based on what people's weaknesses and advantages are.
